Our computers were down and now we’re back

I maintain a large computing system for the LHC ATLAS experiment and last night about 7pm we had our second leak in our large cooling system in two days. (Of course the first one was Saturday in the midst of tailgating around the building.) The leak emitted oil droplets from the compressor which the photoelectric smoke detectors sensed and they shut down the power to the building and summoned the fire trucks. Very exciting.

I went in about 8pm to act all professorial and “supervise” while “our people” brought things back up. Everything was restored by about 3AM.

So you all can now see the homework D1 and D2 questions. As a result you don’t need to have a “try” on those two pieces of the homework.

Oh, “photoelectric.” We’ll talk about that soon.
